The success of an organization depends upon the success of each individual in that organization Let me start out by saying how pleased I am to be here with you in Portland. My name is Lon Holston, and I was hired as an organizer for the Local. I will help the Local in getting itself organized and ready for future contract talks with your employers. I bring with me, a tool chest full of new and tested organizing techniques. Let me tell you little bit about myself. I started out early in my career as a Teamster. I helped organize locals,
all over the West. I have been a member, steward, Vice President, President,
Chief Steward and Chief Negotiator. I was a lobbyist for the Association
of Western pulp and paper workers in Salem. Recently I was the Field Representative
in Southern Oregon for the American Federation of State County and Municipal
Employees (AFSCME). Since I arrived here, approximately 2 weeks ago, I have been traveling to work sites all over the city of Portland. I am excited to see the enthusiasm of my brothers and sisters in furthering the Local’s objectives and goals. One of those objectives is to get more trained stewards in the workplaces.
This training is for existing Stewards, New Stewards and the Members.
I am soon going to be starting steward training classes at the Local’s
main office. These trainings are designed to be informative and fun. We
will have plenty of role-playing. Refreshments and food will be provided. One of the goals we are trying to achieve is to have one steward per
10 members; this can be achieved with all of us working together. If you
have any suggestions on how to achieve your union's goals, please feel
free to talk with me. I'm calling on all existing stewards to help me identify members, who would make good stewards. I am asking for all members, who would like to have training as a steward to contact me. Please call in to the office and leave your name, workplace and
